Some of the most widely used reactions in organic synthesis suffer from drawbacks that can render their use impractical or are difficult to perform. For example, Mitsunobu, Wittig, and Appel reactions all result in the formation of a full equivalent of triphenylphosphine oxide, which can be similar in polarity to the desired product, and thus be difficult to remove. This seminar will summarize our recent research to address such issues by developing polymeric tools designed to simplify product isolation from these transformations and how phosphine oxides can be used productively as catalysts in a range of reactions.
